Rough Riders Blast Their Way Back

Their six shooters blazing, the Connecticut Congress of Rough Riders kicks off its 2025 season this coming Sunday, April 6th. Each month through December, on the first Sunday, a safety briefing begins the day at 9:30am. Cowboy competitors in period dress engage a series of staged targets, pinging steel to beat the clock with the highest accuracy. Drawing lever action rifles, double barreled shotguns, and single action revolvers, these Cowboy Action competitions commence at High Rock Range, 100 Black Forest Rd, Naugatuck—in the heart of the Naugatuck State Forest. There will be no public shoot at the range that day, but spectators are very welcome so long as they bring their own hearing protection and safety glasses.

Use this guide to build your own target stand if you’d like to test pattern your shotgun with birdshot at the Rock. You can use our base, and we’ll even give you the cardboard to mount a target if you like. Please remember—birdshot only, and all shotguns must be able to be shouldered to fire. There is no shooting from the hip.
If you’re only shooting slugs, feel free to use one of our stands free of charge just as if you were shooting rifle or carbine. And thank you for making High Rock your best bet to prep for your season.

Don’t Get Blindsided

Remember, you must bring your own hearing and eye protection when you visit the Rock. Prescription glasses and sunglasses DON’T COUNT unless they have the MINIMUM of an ANSi rating of Z87.1. MIL-PRF-31013 is better, but Z87.1 is the minimum acceptable.
